The Discovery coin is part of Perth Mint's ongoing effort to produce record-weight investment pieces that double as collectibles — this example, at roughly 1.8 kilograms of four-nines gold set with a diamond, sits at the extreme end of that ambition. Perth has a long history of issuing oversized bullion, traceable to its Nugget series of the 1980s, but the sheer logistics of striking at this weight require hydraulic presses well outside standard bullion production.
The "Discovery" name references the Australian gold rush era, when nuggets of comparable mass were occasionally pulled from Victorian and New South Wales fields in the 1850s.
