Oberhof was already an established winter resort town by 1922, and the Gemeinde's decision to issue notgeld in an unusual 90-Pfennig denomination — bypassing the far more common 25, 50, and 75 Pfennig values — suggests these were conceived primarily as collector-targeted Serienscheine rather than functional emergency currency. The hyperinflationary spiral of 1922 made small-denomination paper increasingly pointless for actual commerce, and resort municipalities across Thuringia were among the most aggressive in exploiting collector demand for regional notgeld issues.
Meisenbach Riffarth & Co. of Leipzig were chromolithographers by trade, responsible for high-quality illustrated notgeld across dozens of municipalities. The signature of Rich. Langenhan identifies the issuing official, almost certainly the Bürgermeister or a designated municipal treasurer.
