Austrian Notgeld of this type was produced in enormous quantities between 1919 and 1922, driven less by genuine monetary necessity than by a collector market that had developed almost instantly around the series. Weissenkirchen in der Wachau — a small market town in Lower Austria's wine country — issued its Notgeld through the municipal authority at a moment when the newly truncated Austrian republic was still finding its financial footing after the collapse of the Habsburg currency system.
The 90 Heller denomination is among the less common face values in this series; most Wachau issues clustered around rounder figures, and the odd denomination sometimes indicates a secondary printing run aimed squarely at the collector trade rather than till use.
