Schwaz, once the most important silver-mining town in Europe, had exhausted both its mines and its economic significance long before 1920. This 90 Heller note belongs to the Austrian Notgeld wave that followed the collapse of the Habsburg Empire — municipal authorities across the former crownlands were left scrambling to plug a catastrophic small-change shortage as the new Republic's currency infrastructure took time to establish. Wagner in Innsbruck handled a considerable volume of Tyrolean Notgeld during this period, which kept production costs low but also meant the notes circulated alongside dozens of near-identical issues from neighboring towns.
