Pirchhorn is a tiny settlement in the Salzkammergut region, and its Notgeld issue is among the more obscure Austrian emergency municipality notes — issued during the acute small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918. Local councils across Upper Austria were authorized to print their own fractional currency precisely because coins had vanished from circulation almost entirely, hoarded or melted down in the war years.
H. Siebert as designer suggests a locally commissioned piece rather than one farmed out to Vienna's larger Notgeld printers. The single signatory, Karl Hiesmaier, was almost certainly the Bürgermeister or municipal treasurer responsible for validating the issue.
