Klaus is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 90 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria's smaller communities in the immediate postwar period — a direct consequence of wartime hoarding and the near-total disappearance of small coinage from circulation. The denomination itself is characteristic of Austrian municipal Notgeld, which often issued in odd values to cover exact change requirements rather than round sums.
Printed by F. Seitenberg in Vienna, the note carries three local signatories: the cashier and both the mayor and his deputy — an unusual doubling of mayoral authority in the signature line that likely reflects a transitional administration in 1920.
