Hargelsberg is a small Upper Austrian municipality, and like hundreds of comparable communities, it issued Notgeld during the post-WWI economic collapse when small coin had virtually vanished from circulation. The 90 Heller denomination is notably awkward — most Austrian Notgeld favored round figures or denominations that aligned with standard pricing. A 90 Heller value suggests the commune was trying to fill a very specific transactional gap in local commerce rather than simply reprinting conventional denominations.
Josef Edlmaier's signature identifies him as the responsible local official, almost certainly the Bürgermeister. The Jaksc catalogue reference confirms this as a legitimate recorded issue rather than a later fantasy piece.
