A small vignette at the top center depicts a chained dog guarding a safe, serving as an anti-counterfeiting device typical of mid-19th century American local scrip. Municipal fractional currency was a Confederate-era stopgap, issued when small coins vanished almost entirely from circulation after 1861. Lynchburg's 90-cent denomination is among the more unusual face values to survive from this period — most city-issued scrip clustered around 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents, making a 90-cent note an outlier worth noting.
Locally printed under wartime conditions, production quality across the Lynchburg series is inconsistent. Paper stock varied by print run.
