Obverse description Counterstamped host coin: Spanish colonial Peru (Lima mint) 8 Reales (KM#97). The original obverse features a draped and laureate bust of King Charles IV of Spain facing right, with the royal legend surrounding the effigy. Superimposed upon the obverse field is a crowned 'G' countermark applied by British colonial authorities during the occupation of Guadeloupe in 1811. A crenated square hole has been cut through the center of the coin, distinguishing it as a locally sanctioned currency issue. The countermark appears as a small crowned capital letter 'G' struck into the coin's surface.
