Obverse description The arms of Bern displayed centrally on an ornate baroque shield, charged with a walking bear in the dexter half and a diagonal stripe in the sinister half, surmounted by a mural crown. The shield is supported by a rampant bear to the left and a rampant lion to the right, each standing on a decorative plinth. Below the shield, an elaborate cartouche bears the mint master's initials DB. The circular Latin legend MONETA REIPVBLICÆ BERNENSIS DB runs around the periphery, enclosed by a continuous beaded border.
