Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms — the escutcheon bearing the quinas (five bezants in saltire on a blue field) within a bordure of castles — is depicted mounted upon a terrestrial globe, symbolising the far-reaching extent of the Portuguese empire. The arms are rendered in fine engraved detail with hatching to indicate tinctures. The surrounding Latin legend CIRCUMIT ORBEM PECUNIA TOTUM ('Money encircles the whole world') runs between the inner beaded border and the outer milled rim.
