| Obverse description | Central field displays the denomination in large Roman numerals LXXX surmounted by a royal crown, with the date 1818 inscribed below, flanked by small quatrefoil ornaments. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend JOANNES·D·G·PORT·ET·BRAS·P·REGENS runs around the periphery between the beaded border and an outer dotted rim, reading the authority of João as Prince Regent of Portugal and Brazil. The design is executed in a bold, utilitarian style characteristic of early nineteenth-century Brazilian colonial copper coinage. |
