Obverse description Central field displays the large Roman numeral denomination XL (40 Réis) of the host coin, surmounted by a royal crown. Superimposed at center is an applied oval countermark bearing the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield — struck by order of the Prince Regent in 1809 to double the face value. The circular legend surrounding the design reads IOSEPHUS I D G R ET BRA SI LL REX with the host date 1753 appearing below the central devices. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border.
