Obverse description The obverse displays the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield bearing the traditional quinas (five escutcheons) and castles — centred within a beaded inner circle. The regal crown surmounts the shield, rendered in bold relief. The date of the host coin (1757) appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The peripheral Latin legend, separated by pellets, reads IOSEPHUS·I·D·G·REX·P·ET·D·GUINEAE·XL, identifying King José I of Portugal and Guinea and the original denomination of forty réis. The design is characteristic of the Lisbon colonial copper coinage of the mid-eighteenth century.
