Pöchlarn is a small market town on the south bank of the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 80 Heller Notgeld emerges from the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to produce their own emergency small-denomination scrip, and hundreds of Austrian towns did exactly that between 1919 and 1922.
The 80 Heller denomination is an odd one — most series clustered around 10, 20, 50, and 75 Heller — which suggests Pöchlarn either had a specific local pricing need or was filling gaps left by an earlier issue.
