The "80 Dollars" denomination is a fiction of convenience — Niue, a self-governing island in free association with New Zealand, has no domestic gold currency tradition whatsoever and issues these large-format silver pieces purely as collectibles under licensing arrangements. The face value bears no relationship to any transactional reality. Charles III's effigy appears on Niue issues because the Crown retains formal authority over the territory, making it one of the smaller and more obscure venues through which the new king's portrait entered the numismatic market following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
