Smetana composed his cycle Má vlast — the work for which he is most celebrated — after becoming completely deaf, finishing it in 1879. The bitter irony is that he never heard the completed cycle performed. Niue has become a reliable vehicle for large-format commemorative silver of this kind, with its issuing authority functioning essentially as a licensing arrangement for international mints targeting collector markets rather than any domestic circulation need.
