Obverse description Facing effigies of Queen Sofia (left) and King Juan Carlos I (right), their busts in high relief turned toward one another within a beaded inner circle. Sofia is depicted diademed with an elaborate tiara and draped bust, while Juan Carlos wears a military uniform adorned with decorations. The circular legend JVAN:CARLOS:I:REY:DE:ESPAÑA runs along the outer border, separated from the beaded circle by the field, with the date 1989 inscribed at the base flanked by rosette ornaments. The design is engraved by Luis José Díaz Salas in a refined classical style characteristic of Spanish commemorative issues.
