Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms displayed centrally within an ornate shield, featuring the characteristic quinas (five escutcheons with bezants) of the Kingdom of Portugal. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork in the field. The entire design is rendered in high relief typical of hammered gold coinage, set within a beaded border encircling the coin's periphery.

Reverse description A bold cross of Saint Thomas (Cruz de São Tomé) with flared terminals dominates the reverse, dividing the field into four quarters. The date numerals and denomination indicator are distributed across the four quadrants formed by the cross, reading '8-X' and the year date. The cross is rendered in high relief with clearly defined arms, all contained within a beaded border consistent with hammered coinage of the period.
