Duy Tân was placed on the throne at age seven following the French-engineered abdication of his father Thành Thái, who had grown inconveniently nationalist. The high-denomination gold issues of his reign were produced in tiny quantities for ceremonial and court use, never approaching anything like general circulation. Fr#65a distinguishes itself from the base Fr#65 by a documented die variant in the reverse inscription spacing — a detail that collapses the already narrow population into something narrower still.
