Obverse description Six-line Latin inscription occupying the entire field, with the denomination numeral '8' prominently displayed in the uppermost line, flanked by crosses. The remaining lines bear the ruler's name and titles in abbreviated form, identifying Carlo II as Duke of Mantua, Monferrato, and related territories. The legend is arranged in a stacked, tabular format characteristic of small billon coinage of the Italian states in the mid-seventeenth century. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hammered production. A cross or pellet stop punctuates each abbreviation throughout the inscription.
