Obverse description The obverse displays the Mexican republican eagle, depicted facing left and perched upon a nopal cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, with a serpent grasped in its beak. The eagle is flanked by laurel and oak branches forming a decorative wreath at the base. A small circular Costa Rican countermark — featuring a five-pointed star within a beaded circle — is applied to the eagle's body at center. The circumferential legend reads REPUBLICA MEXICANA in raised Latin letters, and a round hole pierced through the lower field of the coin is characteristic of this Costa Rican emergency issue.
