| Reverse description | The reverse trial die presents the same central motif as the obverse: a Phrygian liberty cap inscribed LIBERTAD on its band, surrounded by a bold sunburst of radiating rays emanating from behind the cap and extending to the inner border. The peripheral inscription, again flanked by rosette ornaments, repeats the denomination and assay data: 8 R Mo 1823 J M 10 Ds 20 Cs. This reverse trial piece lacks the eagle design ultimately adopted for regular coinage, making it a significant transitional pattern in early Mexican numismatic history. A beaded border encircles the design at the rim. |
