Obverse description The obverse displays the Mexican republican eagle passant, depicted facing left with wings spread and clutching a serpent in its beak, perched atop a cactus rising from a rocky outcrop. The eagle is rendered in high relief with finely detailed feather work characteristic of the early First Republic coinage style. Flanking the base of the cactus are sprigs of oak and laurel, tied at the bottom. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs across the upper field in capital Latin letters, with a toothed or milled border encircling the entire design.
