Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican national eagle displayed facing left, perched upon a prickly pear cactus (nopal) growing from a rocky outcrop surrounded by water, with a serpent grasped in the beak and talon in the traditional manner. The eagle's wings are spread wide in a bold, high-relief rendition characteristic of the early Republican period. Flanking the central device on either side are laurel and oak branches forming a partial wreath. The legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs along the upper periphery in capital Latin letters.
