Obverse description The obverse of the host coin depicts the laureate and draped bust of Ferdinand VII facing right, occupying the central field. The peripheral legend reads FERDIN • VII • DEI • GRATIA with the date 1816 incorporated into the inscription. Prominently applied over the king's neck and chest area is the Philippine countermark — a sunken circular punch bearing a crowned Y·II· (Isabel II) monogram surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial, applied by the Spanish colonial authorities in Manila between 1834 and 1837 to validate Mexican 8 Reales for circulation in the Philippines. The host coin surfaces exhibit circulation wear consistent with extended use prior to countermarking.
