| Additional information |
When the newly independent Republic of Peru lacked the infrastructure to mint its own coinage immediately after breaking from Spain, the provisional government authorized the countermarking of existing Spanish colonial 8 reales — including those still bearing the portrait of Fernando VII — to legitimize them as republican currency. The irony of a crown portrait circulating under republican authority was apparently considered less problematic than a coin shortage.
KM#130 pieces vary considerably in countermark placement and strike depth, a direct result of the improvised nature of the operation. Countermarks applied off-center or partially struck are common and carry no premium penalty in specialist collections.
