Obverse description Central field displays a large heraldic shield bearing a rampant lion, flanked by saltire crosses arranged in a decorative pattern across the escutcheon. The shield is rendered in low relief in the crude, hand-worked style characteristic of Oaxacan provisional coinage. Above the shield, a rectangular cartouche contains the mint mark letter 'R'. The entire design is enclosed within a distinctive border of raised beads or pellets, a hallmark of the Oaxaca provisional series. The overall style reflects the emergency wartime production context of the insurgent mint.
