| Obverse description | Central crowned quartered shield of the Catholic Monarchs bearing the arms of Castile (castle) and León (lion) in alternating quarters, with a sinister base point charged with the pomegranate of Granada, all surmounted by a royal crown in high relief. The denomination mark 'VIII' and assayer initial 'S' appear flanking the shield in the field. A circular beaded inner border frames the design, with the Latin legend running around the periphery reading FERNANDVS ET ELISABET DEI GRA. The heraldic rendering follows the style of late 15th-century Spanish coinage under the Catholic Monarchs. |
