Obverse description The obverse displays the arms of the Republic of New Granada rendered in a distinctive serpentine (culebrilla) style, featuring a condor with spread wings perched atop a cornucopia and a pomegranate, flanked by two undulating ribbon scrolls. The motto LIBERTAD I ORDEN appears on a scroll across the center of the design. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE LA NUEVA GRANADA runs along the periphery, with the date — here 1840 — positioned in the lower exergue between two small pellets. The overall engraving style is characteristic of the Bogotá Mint's early republican coinage, with bold, deeply struck lettering and a somewhat rustic rendering of the national arms.
