Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King Charles IV of Spain facing right, rendered in the neoclassical portrait style characteristic of late 18th-century Spanish colonial coinage. The king's hair is tied with a ribbon at the back and decorated with a laurel wreath. The legend CAROLUS·IIII·DEI·GRATIA encircles the effigy, reading from the lower left around to the upper right, with the date appearing in the lower exergue flanked by pellets. A toothed border frames the entire design.

The crowned shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each entwined with a banner bearing the motto PLUS ULTRA. The mint mark, assayer initials, and denomination appear to the left of the shield, while the circular legend HISPAN·ET IND·REX·LIMAE reads around the periphery. A toothed border frames the design.
