Obverse description Central device depicts the Pillars of Hercules design: two crowned columns flanking a crowned royal globe resting upon stylized waves, the left column inscribed PLUS and the right column inscribed VLTR, together forming the motto PLUS VLTRA. The columns are entwined with banderoles bearing the motto text. The mint mark LM appears to the lower left and lower right of the central device, flanking the date 1767 at the base. The whole is encircled by a beaded border with the peripheral Latin legend reading VTRAQUE VNUM, a reference to the union of the Old and New Worlds.
