Obverse description Quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León arranged within the four quadrants of a bold cross pattée, the whole occupying the central field in the characteristic macuquina (cob) style. The castle, depicted with three towers and a central arched gateway, appears in the upper-left and lower-right quadrants, while the rampant lion passant occupies the upper-right and lower-left quadrants. The irregular flan, typical of hammered cob coinage, obscures portions of the surrounding circular legend, which would ordinarily read the titulature of Carlos II. The die-struck design is boldly rendered despite the crude planchet preparation inherent to this series.
