Reverse description A crowned eagle — popularly known as the 'crowned chick' due to its rudimentary, somewhat juvenile rendering — stands facing left with wings spread, perched atop a prickly pear cactus (nopal) growing from a rocky outcrop. The eagle wears a small imperial crown on its head. The surrounding circular legend contains the denomination numeral 8, the assayer initials J·M, and the mint mark, all separated by raised dots. A milled border frames the design.
