Reverse description The central device features the early Chilean national shield, a vertically divided rectangular escutcheon displaying horizontal lines in the upper half and vertical lines in the lower half, with a prominent five-pointed star at center. A palm tree rises above the shield as the crest. The shield is encircled by a wreath composed of laurel and palm branches, tied at the base with a ribbon, beneath which the date 1837 appears in the exergue. The denomination 8 R flanks the shield at mid-field, and the mintmaster initials So I J are incorporated within the circumferential legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE.
