| Obverse description | Plain field bearing six large Chinese characters arranged in two horizontal rows within a recessed central disc, identifying the issuing merchant firm. The legend reads 長乾字 / 沙益號 (Changsha Chien-Yi Firm), rendered in bold, brushstroke-style relief script. The central disc is bordered by a raised inner ring, itself surrounded by a prominent beaded border running along the coin's periphery. The design is purely epigraphic, with no pictorial devices or additional ornamentation. |

| Additional information |
Private silver bullion issues from Changsha's commercial houses emerged in the late Qing period to fill a genuine gap — provincial mints were inconsistent, and foreign trade dollars circulated at unpredictable discounts. The Chien-Yi firm, like several other Hunan merchant houses, struck these pieces to facilitate local commerce on terms their own clients could trust. Kann 976 is among the less documented of the private bullion issues; examples surface rarely enough that establishing a reliable population is difficult.
