Christian V came to power in 1670 inheriting a Denmark transformed by the 1665 Kongelov — the most absolutist constitutional document in European history, which concentrated virtually unlimited power in the crown. This coin was struck five years into that new order, during a period of aggressive monetary reform aimed at rationalizing a chaotic dual-denomination system where marks and kroner coexisted on the same coin face, reflecting competing accounting traditions in different regions of the kingdom.
The Scanian War with Sweden had begun the year before, and silver was under pressure. The .767 fineness of this issue is notably below the standard of earlier Danish crown-sized pieces.
