| Obverse description | Central field bears a crowned shield of Castile depicting a triple-towered castle, surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finial. The mint mark (MD for Madrid) appears to the left of the shield, with the denomination numeral VIII visible to the right. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, with the partial Latin royal legend running along the periphery. The strike is characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage, resulting in an irregular planchet with uneven distribution of the design. |
