Obverse description Central device consisting of the Portuguese royal coat of arms — a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) and the bordure of castles, set upon a mantled escutcheon — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown with cross finial. The shield is flanked by ornate scrollwork and decorative floral rosette ornaments in the field. The surrounding circular legend reads MARIA·I·D·G·REGINA·P·ET·D·GUINEÆ·, identifying Queen Maria I of Portugal by the grace of God, Regina of Portugal and Duchess of Guinea, rendered in raised Latin capitals with dot separators.
