| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a multi-line Arabic inscription naming the Ottoman Sultan, reading 'Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi Abdulhamid Khan', arranged in three lines within a wreath of olive or laurel branches tied at the base. The wreath frames the entire inscription, with foliate sprays extending symmetrically to either side. Tunisia in this period occupied an awkward dual sovereignty: nominally an Ottoman province under Abdulhamid II, but effectively governed by the Husainid bey Muhammad III al-Sadiq with growing French commercial and diplomatic pressure already reshaping the regency's finances. The joint attribution on this coin reflects that uneasy arrangement — Istanbul's suzerainty acknowledged in name while Tunis managed its own monetary affairs in practice. The French Protectorate arrived in 1881, ending the series abruptly.
