Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of the Abbey of Essen — a double-headed eagle displayed — enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A crown surmounts the shield. The circular Latin legend MONETA·NOVA·1657 runs around the periphery, with the date flanking the upper portion of the design. The strike is characteristic of hammered technique, with moderate flan irregularity typical of mid-17th-century minor ecclesiastical coinage.
