Additional information

Portugal's "Values of Football" series was issued to coincide with the country's hosting of UEFA Euro 2004, the first major international tournament Portugal had hosted since the 1986 World Cup qualifier controversy pushed the nation's football infrastructure into a long overdue modernization. The 8 euro denomination itself was an artifact of Portugal's recent euro adoption in 2002 — the Imprensa Nacional experimented briefly with collector denominations that had no circulation equivalent, a practice quietly abandoned after this series.
