Additional information

Portugal issued this coin as part of its official UEFA Euro 2004 host nation series — one of several denominations and themes struck by INCM to commemorate the tournament held across ten Portuguese stadiums that summer. The 8 euro face value was invented specifically for the series, having no practical circulation function; the denomination exists nowhere else in Portuguese monetary history.

The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative silver issue, a cost-containment decision that kept the coins accessible to a mass collector market rather than a bullion-focused one.
