Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican national eagle — a slender, forward-facing raptor with wings spread, devouring a serpent grasped in its beak, perched atop a nopal cactus growing from a rocky outcrop amid water. The eagle is rendered in the early 'thin eagle' style characteristic of the first Mexican Republic patterns of 1823. Flanking the central device at lower left and right are sprigs of oak and laurel. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA arcs across the upper field, separated from the inner device by a beaded border.
