| Obverse description | Central crowned quartered royal arms of Spain within the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, displaying castles and lions in the quarters with a central escutcheon bearing the Bourbon fleur-de-lis. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The surrounding legend reads +PHILIPUS+V+DEI+GRA+ in Latin, denoting Felipe V by the Grace of God, separated by mullet stops. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border. |

Felipe V suspended gold coinage at the Madrid mint for much of his reign, making issues from this facility significantly rarer than contemporary output from Seville or Mexico City. The years 1719–1727 bracket a period of acute fiscal strain following the War of the Spanish Succession, during which Spain was simultaneously rebuilding its treasury and prosecuting the failed Alberoni-backed Jacobite expedition of 1719.
Madrid 8 escudos of this type are notably underrepresented in major auction records compared to their provincial counterparts.
