| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the full royal arms of Spain, a quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile, lions of León, the complex composite arms of Aragon-Sicily-Jerusalem-Portugal in the second quarter, the fleurs-de-lis of France in the third quarter, and the pomegranate of Granada in base, the whole surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark 'R' (Segovia) appears to the left of the shield, with the assayer's initial below. The surrounding legend reads PHILIPPVS IIII D G R VIII in Latin capitals, separated by star stops, running clockwise around the milled border. |
