Obverse description Armored and draped bust of King Carlos III facing right, rendered in high relief in the Neoclassical style. The king wears a cuirass with elaborate shoulder decoration and a lace jabot at the throat, his hair dressed in the period fashion with a queue and side curls. The date 1786 appears in the lower field, flanked by small rosette ornaments. The circular Latin legend reads CAROL·III·D·G· HISP·ET IND·R·, attributing to the king his titles as King of Spain and the Indies by the Grace of God. The coin is framed by a bold milled border of uniform beading.

Reverse description The quartered royal arms of Spain displayed on an ornate escutcheon surmounted by the royal crown, the shield incorporating the castles of Castile, the lions of León, the chains of Navarre, the fleurs-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty, and the pomegranate of Granada at the base. The shield is flanked by elaborate laurel and palm branches, with the denomination numeral 8 to the left and the mint initial S to the right of the central device. The mint assayer's initials SC appear at the bottom of the field. The surrounding Latin legend reads IN·UTROQ·FELIX· ·AUSPICE·DEO, meaning 'Happy in both, under the auspices of God.' The entire design is enclosed within a uniform beaded border.
