Obverse description Central crowned Royal Arms of Spain, quartered with the castles of Castile and lions of León, with the pomegranate of Granada in base, all within the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece suspended below the shield. The denomination numeral 8 appears to the right of the shield and the mint assayer initial BR (or M) to the left. The encircling Latin legend reads CAROLVS · II · D · G, with the reeded milled border visible at the periphery.

Reverse description A bold cross pattée set within a quadrilobe (quatrefoil) frame, with a crowned lion passant guardant in each of the four lobes formed between the arms of the cross. The date 1687 appears prominently at the top of the field above the quatrefoil, and the circular Latin legend HISPANIARVM · REX · surrounds the entire design, all within a finely reeded milled border.
