| Obverse description | Central field features the early Chilean coat of arms comprising a divided shield bearing a five-pointed star, flanked by a rearing crowned horse to the left and a standing crowned condor to the right, both serving as supporters. Above the shield rises a plumed crest. The base of the composition is adorned with foliate and floral ornamental scrollwork. KM#PnA4 is a pattern issue from the Santiago mint, struck during a period of significant monetary reform debates in Chile following independence. The brass composition immediately marks this as a trial piece — Chile's circulating 8 escudos coinage of this period was struck in gold, and brass was used to test dies without committing precious metal.
Pattern survivorship from the Santiago mint in this decade is extremely low.
