Obverse description Crowned oval shield bearing the arms of Bern — a diagonal band on a striated field — supported on the left by a standing bear and on the right by a rampant lion, both rendered in fine relief. The supporters stand upon an ornate Baroque cartouche base with foliate scrollwork, and the mintmaster's initials DB appear in the lower field beneath the shield. The circular legend MONETA REIPVBLICÆ BERNENSIS reads around the periphery, separated by a star, with the entire design enclosed within a beaded border.
